So, Chris Simon gets a measly 30-game stint on the sidelines for attempting to end Jarkko Ruutu’s career. Nice to see the NHL is as toothless and weak-willed as ever when it comes to punishing despicable acts of aggression.

Simon’s latest suspension – his seventh in the NHL – begs the question: Exactly what does a player in this league have to do to get banned for life? Break the 20-suspension barrier? Waterboard an opponent in the middle of the rink? Attempt to relocate a franchise to Hamilton?

No wonder NHLers feel they need to take on-ice matters into their own hands. The men who are supposed to be protecting them obviously don’t have the gonads to properly do so.

Movie Night

As a film aficionado, I loved the Washington Post’s recent blog profile on new Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau and his use of movie clips as an inspirational tool.

During his coaching career, Boudreau has used snippets from movies such as Gladiator, Varsity Blues, and Rudy to pump up his players. And since he’s taken over from Glen Hanlon in Washington, the Capitals are 7-4-2, so he must be doing something right.

As long as Boudreau doesn’t start using passages from Hairspray, Love In The Time of Cholera (worst movie title ever, by the way) or Mister Magorium’s Wonder Emporium (second-worst movie title ever), he and his charges may be able to turn Ted Leonsis’ ship around.

Whether or not that turnaround is in time to save Washington’s chance at a playoff berth, however, is another story entirely.
