When Jared Cowen went down with a severe knee injury months before the NHL draft in 2009, his fast track to professional hockey hit a major road block. But 20 months later, his progression is back on course.

The 19-year-old defenseman is coming off a career year in the Western League where he set new personal highs in goals and points and feels he’s ready to take the next step. So this fall, Cowen is focused on one goal: starting the year with the Ottawa Senators.

Sean Leathong caught up with Cowen as the blue-chip defender wrapped up his first rookie tournament in London, Ont.
