The Pittsburgh Penguins confirmed earlier today that defenseman Kris Letang is out of the hospital, but will be out indefinitely with a concussion after taking a hit from Coyotes winger Shane Doan on Saturday night.

The hit happened during the second period with Doan finishing a check behind the play, which resulted in Letang falling backwards and his head hitting the ice. Doan was not assessed a penalty by the on-ice officials and the NHL confirmed there would be no supplemental discipline handed down.

The 27-year-old Letang, who has a well documented injury history, was in the midst of a stellar season that saw him regain status as one of the top defenseman in the NHL. His 11 goals and 54 points in 69 games make him third highest scorer on the Penguins behind Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, leaving a gaping hole on the Penguins roster heading into the playoffs.

Letang’s injury has left Pittsburgh with very few options on the blueline, forcing the club to dress only five defenseman for tonight’s game against San Jose.
