Waddell calls off coaching search for rest of season

Publish date:

Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell has called off his search for a new head coach.

"We're not going to bring anybody in from the outside this season," Waddell told The Canadian Press on Friday.

Waddell took over behind the bench after firing Bob Hartley last month. The Thrashers were 8-4 under Waddell going into Friday's game at Carolina.

Waddell stopped short of saying he would definitely continue behind the bench for the rest of the season, raising the possibility that assistant coach Brad McCrimmon could possibly get promoted before the end of the year.

But for now, it's status quo with Waddell as head coach.

"Things are going well now," said Waddell.

"We were hoping no changes would be made," Thrashers captain Bobby Holik told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Why bring in something new when it's working?"
