Velazquez wins Shoemaker Award at Breeders' Cup

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) John Velazquez has won his third career Bill Shoemaker Award as the top jockey of the Breeders' Cup after another rider was mistakenly announced as the winner.

Javier Castellano was originally announced as the recipient of the honor, and he accepted the trophy Saturday. The Breeders' Cup later cited a tabulation error for the mistake and apologized.

Velazquez totaled 26 points in the scoring system that decides the winner. Castellano and Rosie Napravnik tied for second with 20 points apiece.

Velazquez won the $3 million Breeders' Cup Turf with Main Sequence and had four other top-three finishes on Saturday at Santa Anita.

The award is named for the late jockey who won four Kentucky Derbies and more than 8,800 races in his career.
