Could Sinclair Rebrand RSNs Under Stadium Label?

Editor Note: ‘Early Entrants’ is a series of sports business ‘rumblings’ before the news breaks.

It’s being reported (as if it’s news and not common sense) that Sinclair Broadcast Group (SBGI) intends on rebranding the 21 Fox RSNs it acquired from Disney in short order. One must wonder if the announcement’s timing is tied to the closing of another transaction.

On Wednesday’s earnings call, CEO Chris Ripley announced that the company was “about to increase our ownership in Stadium.” It’s believed that the company is working to acquire a control stake, which seems logical considering stated plans to lean heavily on the digital sports network for “upgraded content [outside of pre and post] at a less expensive price.”

Logic suggests that if SBGI were to take control of Stadium (a convoluted ownership structure exists), that the telecommunications conglomerate would strongly consider rebranding the lot of regional sports networks under the name.
