Lowell trade to Texas called off after exam on ailing thumb

The trade sending Mike Lowell to the Rangers has been called off after a medical examination showed he needed thumb surgery, sources comfirm.

Texas canceled the deal in which Lowell was being traded for hitting prospect Max Ramirez.

Lowell also had hip surgery last winter.

The Rangers might consider Lowell for a lesser price later, but more likely will look elsewhere for a right-handed bat.

Boston had agreed tp pay $9 million of Lowell's $12 million salary.

Lowell hit .290 with 17 home runs and 75 RBIs in 119 games last season.

In 12 major league seasons, Lowell has hit 218 home runs and driven in 926, with a lifetime .280 average. He's also played for the Yankees and Marlins.
