Free agent first baseman Mike Jacobs is close to signing a minor-league deal with the Mets, SI.com has confirmed.

Jacobs would have a chance to earn significant playing time in New York, as Daniel Murphy and Fernando Tatis are their first basemen and the Mets aren't sold on Murphy being ready to start at first. The deal will include performance bonuses.

Jacobs slumped last year in Kansas City, batting .228 with 19 home runs and 61 RBIs for the Royals after hitting 32 home runs in Florida the year before. He came up with the Mets. ESPN.com first reported Jacobs' deal.
