ST. LOUIS -- The Pittsburgh Pirates activated outfielder Starling Marte from the 15-day disabled list Saturday and also recalled right-handed pitcher Brandon Cumpton from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Marte will be available for pinch-running duties only while he recovers from a strained ligament in his right ring finger.

Cumpton, recalled for the third time this season, is 1-1 with a 2.78 ERA in four starts for the Pirates. He compiled a 6-8 mark with a 3.62 ERA in 23 minor league appearances between Indianapolis and Double-A Altoona.

The Pirates also recalled right-handed pitcher James McDonald from the 60-day disabled list and designated him for assignment.
