Nationals' Ian Desmond leaves game after being hit in hand

Friday July 11th, 2014

Washington Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond left Thursday night's loss to the Baltimore Orioles after being hit by a pitch on his right hand.

Nationals manager Matt Williams said after the game that X-rays taken on Desmond's hand were negative. He initially stayed in the game, but left after warming up before the bottom of the eighth inning. One of his warm-up throws sailed high above Nats first baseman Adam LaRoche. Danny Espinosa took over for Desmond at shortstop.

Desmond is batting .241 with 16 homers, 55 RBI, and a .722 OPS  this season. His home run and RBI numbers are  team highs.

Washington is currently tied with the Atlanta Braves for first place in the National League East.
