Smith, 32, batted .266 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs last season. He had a .367 on-base percentage and a .440 slugging percentage. Smith was the subject of trade rumors this summer, but signed a two-year contract extension in July.
Maurer split time between the majors and Triple-A Tacoma in each of the past two seasons. He appeared in 38 games for the Mariners in 2014 and made seven starts. He had a 4.65 ERA in 69.2 innings.
The Padres have made a variety of moves in recent weeks that left them with a surplus of outfielders. San Diego has acquired three starting-quality outfielders this month: Justin Upton, Wil Myers and Matt Kemp. The Padres also acquired catchers Derek Norris, Ryan Hanigan and Tim Federowicz, and pitchers Jose Castillo and RHP Gerardo Reyes.
