SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) Derek Holland pitched three scoreless innings in his spring training debut, but Mike Zunino homered twice as the Seattle Mariners and a Texas Rangers split squad played to a 4-4 tie Friday.

Holland, who had been restricted to one inning in a B' game because of a sore shoulder, threw 32 pitches, giving up two hits and walking one.

''I was en fuego ready to get out there. I'm not kidding,'' said Holland, saying fire in Spanish. ''I was 100 miles per hour in the dugout.''

He added: ''After that first inning was over, everything came back to normal. I had to settle myself big time.''

Zunino homered off Rangers relievers Jon Edwards, a solo shot in the fourth with two strikes, and Spencer Patton with a runner aboard in the sixth. Alex Jackson, the Mariners' first-round pick in the 2014 draft, homered in the eighth.

''I feel like I'm night and day better,'' Zunino said when hitting with two strikes. ''I feel like I know what I want to accomplish with two strikes.''

Mitch Moreland hit a two-run homer for the Rangers in the seventh.

Mariners left-hander Roenis Elias allowed two runs - one earned - on five hits and two walks in four-plus innings.


Mariners: Elias threw 72 pitches before being pulled after walking two in the fifth. ''In the fifth inning, I lost my control,'' Elias said through an translator. ''I tried to do a little more than I should be. I adjusted and got it back in a bullpen session.''

Rangers: Holland, who had knee surgery last January and missed the first five months of the season, said his shoulder is fine. ''We're past that,'' Holland said. ''I know we've had the history with our injury last year. I told you guys from the start, don't panic. I'm fine. I think I've shown that from my past two starts.''


Plate umpire Ben May ejected Rangers LHP Alex Claudio after his first offering struck Mariners C Jesus Sucre. The Rangers had two plunked: C Robinson Chirinos and LF Ryan Rua.


Mariners: 2B Rickie Weeks, who was sick Thursday, got at-bats in minor league camp Friday.

Rangers: LHP Ross Detwiler, who exited a March 13 appearance after two innings when he was struck in his non-throwing right wrist by a line drive, threw four scoreless innings in the minor league complex Friday. He struck out four and induced six ground outs.


OF Stefen Romero, who started 45 games last season but hit only .192 and struck out 48 times in 177 at-bats, was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma as the Mariners trimmed 11 from their big league camp. The Mariners also optioned OF James Jones, LHP Lucas Luetge, C John Hicks, first baseman Jesus Montero and shortstop Ketel Marte to Tacoma. Non-roster invitees assigned to minor league camp were veteran OF Franklin Gutierrez, LHP Rafael Perez, RHP Justin Germano, and INFs Pat Kivlehan and D.J. Peterson.


Mariners: Felix Hernandez, who will start the April 6 season opener against the Angels, makes his second Cactus League start Saturday against the Cubs.

Rangers: RHP Colby Lewis, who has a 13.50 ERA in his first two appearances, starts Saturday against the Brewers.
