Three pitches after Orioles pitcher Jason Garcia threw behind Toronto's Jose Bautista, the slugger hit a homer to put his team up 12-4.
The Blue Jays would go on to win the game 13-6, with Mark Buehrle picking up the win. Edwin Encarnacion homered twice, with solo shots in the second and sixth innings.
Bautista's home run came in the seventh, with Toronto up 11-4. After the pitch from Garcia sailed behind him, Bautista stared the pitcher down.
Bautista then hit the home run and had words for Orioles second baseman Ryan Flaherty on his way around the bases. He and Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones also chirped at each other between innings after the home run.
After the game, Bautista told reporters that Jones told him Bautista's reaction was "bush league." Bautista said he replied, "What’s bush league is you throwing behind my head."
"I play with a lot of passion, you throw at me, I’m not going to forget. If I get you right after then I’m going to enjoy it. And I did," said Bautista.
Bautista: I think it’s all pretty well planned out & premeditated & I think they hide behind the way their manager acts and conducts himself— Shi Davidi (@ShiDavidi) April 22, 2015
More Bautista: "They’re going to continue to keep doing that until something comes down from MLB."— Shi Davidi (@ShiDavidi) April 22, 2015
Asked about the sequence with Bautista, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said, "The last time we played them [Orioles pitcher Darren] O’Day threw a ball right behind them, we didn’t whine and cry. It’s just kind of odd."
