Mets place catcher Travis d'Arnaud on DL with sprained left elbow
The New York Mets placed catcher Travis d'Arnaud on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left elbow, the team announced Tuesday. Catcher Johnny Monell was called up from Triple A to take his place on the roster.
D'Arnaud was injured in Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves when he attempted to tag Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski. His left arm snapped back after he tried to apply the tag and he left the game. He did not play in Sunday's series finale.
“You never know what could have happened on that play,” d’Arnaud said Sunday, according to the New York Daily News. “I’m just fortunate that it was only just a hyper-extended elbow.”

The news that d'Arnaud would have to go on the DL did not surprise manager Terry Collins.
“I pretty much kind of was ready to hear it was going to be an issue,” Collins said Tuesday, according to NorthJersey.com.
Injuries have limited d'Arnaud to just 19 games this season. He was out for nearly two months with a fractured finger and returned on June 10. He is batting .296 with four home runs and 17 RBIs.
Rookie Kevin Plawecki will likely take over as the starting catcher. The Mets opted to keep Plawecki and send Anthony Recker to Triple A when d'Arnaud was activated.
