The Washington Nationals placed infielder Anthony Rendon on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a left quad strain, the team announced.

Rendon noticed the injury during teammate Max Scherzer's no-hitter on June 20. He declined to come out of the game, but told the team's training staff he would see them after the game, according to a Washington Postreport

The sixth overall pick in the 2011 MLB draft did not play in the Nationals' game on Sunday, an absence defined as a normal "day off" at the time by manager Matt Williams, the Postnoted. He also did not play in the Nationals' 7–0 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.

Williams also told the Post Rendon underwent an MRI which revealed, “some pretty good changes in there." He characterized the disabled list move as precautionary.

"So, it’s not something you want to mess with,” Williams said, per the report. “If it gets to the point that it becomes worse than it is, then you lose him for an extended period. The problem is if he’s gonna play, he’s gonna play — regardless of whether he’s in the starting lineup or on the bench — he hits a baseball he’s gotta go out of the box.”

In 18 games this season, Rendon has batted .290 with five RBI. Rendon did not make his season debut until June 4, missing action with both right MCL and oblique injuries.
