St. Louis Cardinals prospect Marco Gonzales will undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow and miss the rest of the season, the team announced on Wednesday.

Gonzales missed his start last week due to elbow soreness and was then diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. He missed time during the 2015 season with minor shoulder injuries.

“Hopefully we don't need anybody,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told reporters. “That's my plans, that we keep rolling five guys (the current starters) out there all season. We understand injuries happen, and we will deal with those when they come. There was nothing guaranteeing he (Gonzales) was going to be the one who was ready to go, if he stayed healthy. We obviously want to keep all of our guys and hate to see anybody have to go through surgery and go through injury. But it happens.”

The Gordometer: Can these ex-top prospects go from bust to breakout?

Gonzales has a career 4–2 record with 37 1/3 innings pitched in his career over six starts and five relief outings.
