Angels News: NL East Team Preparing to Making Shohei Ohtani 'Best-Paid Player in the History of Sports'

That's sure to up the bidding war.

Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani is still about 10 months away from entering unrestricted free agency — but that hasn't stopped him from dominating headlines. At least eight teams have been linked to Ohtani as potential landing spots — all teams in big markets with deep pockets.

One of those potential landing spots is the New York Mets, and MLB insiders Jon Heyman and Andy Martino each shared reports about how committed they are to going all-in on the two-way talent. Here was Heyman's report:

"Here’s one Mets person speaking about his assumption regarding Ohtani (and probably most everyone else’s too): "The Mets will make Ohtani the best-paid player in the history of sports — whether he plays for the Mets or not — because the offer will be insane. And if someone else wants to beat it go ahead.""

And here was Martino's, who also spoke about the New York Yankees as a potential landing spot.

"According to sources, Cohen has already been talking openly to upper level Mets people about going after Ohtani this winter. The Yankees were fairly aggressive in their exploration of a trade for Ohtani last July, so they can’t be ruled out."

The fact that Cohen has already been talking to the upper level people shows how committed the Mets are, considering we are 10 months away from next offseason. And then there's Heyman's report from a Mets person saying they'll offer Ohtani a deal to make him the "best-paid player in the history of sports" — clearly, they aren't messing around.

We don't know a lot about Ohtani's impending free agency, but one thing is sure. He's going to get tons of money, and it's going to be one of the greatest bidding wars in sports history.
