The Blue Jays may not be done yet.

After acquiring reliever Brad Hand and starter José Berríos at the 2021 MLB trade deadline, Toronto is discussing a trade for Nationals catcher Yan Gomes.

Alongside the Oakland Athletics, Toronto was connected to Gomes last night, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale, and MLB Network's Jon Morosi confirmed talks between Toronto and Washington were ongoing as of hours before the deadline.

Adding a catcher may seem like an odd fit for the contending Blue Jays, but Danny Jansen is on the injured list for the foreseeable future and both Alejandro Kirk and Reese McGuire have individual flaws at the plate or behind the dish.

Gomes is a solid option in all facets of the game, appearing in the All-Star game and winning a silver slugger during his 10-year MLB career. In 2021, Gomes is posting a 115 OPS+ (.778 OPS) in 63 games.

Gomes began his career as a Blue Jay, playing 43 games for Toronto back in 2012. He hit just .204 and cashed four home runs before he was dealt to Cleveland alongside Mike Aviles for Esmil Rogers.

With five catchers on Toronto's 40-man heading into the deadline, the Blue Jays unloaded from their catching depth earlier this week, flipping Triple-A catcher Riley Adams to Washington for Hand.
