This wasn't much of a surprise.

Ross Stripling was placed on the 10-day injured list with an oblique strain, the Blue Jays announced Wednesday.

Stripling left after pitching two scoreless innings in Game 2 of Tuesday's split doubleheader against the Los Angeles Angels. He underwent tests on Wednesday which confirmed the extent of his injury.

Right-hander Trent Thornton was promoted from Triple A Buffalo in a corresponding move.

For Stripling, the injury is very untimely, as he was battling for the fifth and final spot in Toronto's rotation. Steven Matz will be the Blue Jays fifth starter going forward, manager Charlie Montoyo confirmed.

"Like I always say, you can never have enough pitching because you don't know what's going to happen," Montoyo said after Tuesday's games. "And today we lost a good pitcher."

Oblique strains are sensitive in nature, so, for now, Stripling is without a definitive timeline for his return. When the 31-year-old does return to the team, he seems destined to pitch out of the bullpen.

Stripling was steady before the injury, pitching to a 4.34 ERA (102 ERA+) with an 8.8 K/9 in 19 starts.
