Atlanta Braves option Braden Shewmake to AAA Gwinnett

The prospect was serving as infield depth while Ehire Adrianza was on the injured list

The Atlanta Braves announced a transaction on the off day, returning SS Braden Shewmake to AAA Gwinnett.

Shewmake, 25, debuted in the majors on May 5th after veteran Ehire Adrianza went on the injured list. He started one game in Atlanta, filling in for Vaughn Grissom at shortstop, before Orlando Arcia returned from the injured list and reclaimed his starting spot. In Shewmake's two appearances, he went 0-4 with one shortstop.

Having not appeared in a game for twelve days, returning him back to Gwinnett is a way to get him everyday playing time at both shortstop and second base. He was dividing time at the two positions with Vaughn Grissom prior to Orlando Arcia being called up, and was considered to be major-league caliber defensive depth at both positions.

In his time in Gwinnett this year, Shewmake batted .243/.282/.456 with five homeruns and twelve extra-base hits. Hitting for power has always been an issue for the slender Shewmake, with his career high power production being twelve homeruns in eighty-three games in 2021 for AA Mississippi. He looked to have improved the power stroke in Gwinnett, and will get more opportunities to showcase what he can do with the bat while getting valuable playing time everyday.

Expect an announcement about Ehire Adrianza being activated off of the injured list sometime between now and first pitch tomorrow night.
