A Conversation with Dodgers Prospect Jordan Sheffield

One of the top prospects in the Dodgers' organization has battled injuries and a change in his role over the past couple of seasons, but he is focused on making his mark on 2020.

Jordan Sheffield has been in the Dodgers' organization since he was selected in the first Round (36th overall) of the 2016 draft out of Vanderbilt University. In his time in the system Sheffield has been projected as a starter, and most recently as a reliever. The "Sheff" had dealt with a few bumps and bruises along the way and now looks to be a viable option coming out of the bullpen.

In 2019 Sheffield split time between High-A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Tulsa as a closer. He was effective and posted 13 saves between the two levels along with a 3.27 earned run average. His overall record between the levels was 4-5. Batters did not fare well against Sheffield as he blew away 74 hitters in just 55 innings pitched.

In 2020 Sheffield will most likely remain in a closing or back end of the bullpen type of role. He may start the season in Tulsa, but if he continues to produce and be a dominant force, Sheffield should get his shot in Triple-A by midseason. He even has an outside chance of helping the club in L.A. with relief innings if the Dodgers need his services.

Sheffield, no matter the level or spot he is pitching, will remain intensely competitive on the mound. His fastball is low to mid 90's and his breaking ball is a plus pitch for him as well. His tenacious attitude and grit will help him to continue his rise to the big leagues.
