Could they trade for baby bro?

According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, Edwin Diaz’s younger brother Alexis Diaz is on the Mets’ radar.

While there hasn’t been any trade talk yet, the Cincinnati Reds are seeking young pitching in return.

However, the dilemma of acquiring Diaz is that it will take a haul of prospects. The Mets have been reluctant to part ways with their prospects as they try to build their farm system up.

The Mets showed interest in Diaz ahead of last season’s trade deadline as well, but the price tag was deemed too high.

Diaz is 14-for-14 on saves this season. He is also under cheap control for a number of years, which is why it’ll cost so much to acquire him.

The Mets lost Alexis’ older brother Edwin for the season when he tore his patellar tendon while celebrating a win in the World Baseball Classic.

There’s still an outside chance that Diaz can make it back in September, but it’s a long shot.

Diaz had an elite season for a closer last year, posting a 1.31 ERA, 32 saves and 17.1 K/9. He also won the National League Reliever of the Year Award.

David Robertson has been superb this year as the Mets’ closer, but Alexis would be a nice addition as a second closer in the backend of the bullpen.
