Game 5: Rockies Suffer Loss to A's, Early Departure by Freeland With Back Issue

Kyle Freeland had to come out of the Rockies 5-2 loss to the A's in Mesa, Ariz., after two innings because of a flare up in his lower back. Manager Bud Black did not seem concerned during his post-game session with the media.

The Colorado Rockies had their three-game Cactus League win streak snapped with a 5-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics in Mesa. The Rockies took a 2-2- tie into the eighth inning before reliever Julian Fernandez gave up three runs in the bottom of the inning. He gave up three singles and a doubled, walked a batter and hit a batter.

Rockies Pitcher Notes

RHPKyleFreeland made his first start of Spring Training and allowed one run on one hit (a solo home run by Chad Pinder in the second inning) before being removed from the game prior to the bottom of the third inning with back spasms.

RHP Yency Almonte made his second appearance and allowed one hit with one strikeout over one scoreless inning.

RHP Tim Collins pitched a scoreless inning of relief and retired the side in order with two strikeouts … he has retired all six batters faced across two Cactus League appearances.

RHP Ashton Goudeau made his second Spring appearance and pitched two scoreless innings … allowed one hit, one walk and hit one batter.

Rockies Hitter Notes

Nolan Arenado hit a game-tying, full-count home run to left field in the seventh inning, his first home run this Spring.

Bret Boswell went 1-for-1 to extend his hitting streak to four games, increasing his batting average to .700 (7-for-10).

David Dahl collected Colorado’s other RBI on a ground-out in the third inning. He has driven in a run in each of his last two games.
