DENVER -- It was one sentence in a post-game give-and-take, one sentence that has been highlighted by itself, used randomly and incorrectly and gained a currency that Nolan Arenado never intended.

And it most certainly was not a get-me-outta-here statement, uttered with any incendiary intention.

Yes, Arenado said, “It feels like a rebuild.” But the accommodating Rockies third baseman, the subject of trade talks, was not suggesting that management was tearing down the roster with an eye toward being bad in order to be good. He wasn’t criticizing the front office or his teammates after that afternoon game on Sunday Sept 1.

The Rockies had just lost 6-2 to the Pirates, who completed a four-game sweep at Coors Field. The Pirates entered the series 21 games below .500 but scored 31 runs in their first three wins and then polished off the Rockies a final time.
