Sunday Game Time: Freeland, as starter, Kinley, as closer, Deliver Victory
Kyle Freeland, who had a tightness flare up in his first start of the spring, returned to the mound for the first time in 10 days on Sunday, and all went well in the Rockies 3-1 victory against the Indians. Freeland gave up a home run to Bobby Bradley in the second inning. He walked two and struck out four, and said there was no residual problem with his back.
"I sat down with (catcher Elias) Diaz and told him first outing we worked on the changeup, the sidelines we worked on the curveball so (Sunday) lets mix those two together, and that's what we did. I think I only threw two sliders. The changeup is soft contact or swings and misses. They weren't really swinging at the curveball but I liked the action."
Freeland register three of his strikeouts on changeups and a fourth with his curveball.
Tyler Kinley worked the ninth inning for his second save, and his sixth scoreless appearance this spring.
"So far so good for Tyler," said manager Bud Black. "Obviously you like the velocity. The intent is there every pitch. I really like the slider. He has a good head on his shoulder, a good thinker. There's a lot to like about him."
Wade Davis pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with one walk and one strikeout.
Ashton Goudeau pitched two hitless, scoreless innings with one hit and two strikeouts.
Carlos Estévez struck out the side in the eighth inning and allowed one hit.
Yonathan Daza went 1-for-1 and extended his current hitting streak to six games.
Raimel Tapia hit a two-run home run, his second of Spring Training.
Alan Trejo tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth inning … is 6-for-16 (.375) in Cactus League play.
Two years ago, Ubaldo Jimenez declined a big-league offer, and stayed home in the Dominican Republic to be with his wife, who was bed-ridden during her pregnancy. All went well, and the child is now two years old. And on Sunday, Jimenez celebrated the birth of another child, watching the delivery on his cell phone from the Rockies spring training complex.
"Everything was good this time," he said.
