Apu reads Dodgers' starting lineup (Moe and Chief Wiggum, too)

The Simpsons And here we thought Apu was a Mets fan.

Comedian Hank Azaria has spent the better part of the past quarter-century as one of the key voices of the animated series The Simpsons, a show that's quite possibly the best television comedy ever (you can have your Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show and The Ropers — and yes, I'm completely kidding about the last one). On Sunday, Azaria brought some of his famous voices to life outside the confines of Springfield.

The Dodgers invited Azaria to read Sunday's starting lineup, and he did so while calling upon the voices of three key supporting characters from the long-running TV show: bartender Moe Szyslak, Kwik-E-Mart proprietor Apu Nahasapeemapetilon and police chief Clancy Wiggum. Azaria's performance appeared to be lost on the Dodgers' infamously sparse pregame crowd, but MLB.com preserved it for posterity:

One can quibble with Azaria's choice of voices; the indignation of Comic Book Guy would seem to be a natural fit for the middle third — Scott Van Slyke, Luis Cruz and Skip Schumaker — of the injury-wracked lineup, but all in all, it's good for a giggle or two. Alas, the Dodgers offered more yuck than yuks on the afternoon, scoring just one run in an 8-1 loss, though Yasiel Puig did go 3-for-5 with a double and mustered a brief bit of magic in the field; check out this laser to the plate.
