With news of coronavirus sweeping the nation, there was a bright spot for minor league players today. The MLB announced players who were shut out of spring training camps will continue to receive their team allowances through April 8.

“He thought I was kidding,” Philadelphia Phillies minor leaguer Logan O’Hoppe recounted after telling teammate Vito Friscia the news.

Minor leaguers who usually receive $100-400 per week will receive payments starting Thursday through the previously scheduled end of spring training. The minor league season had been set to start April 9, but was delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Late last week, players were told to go home, including those in other countries who might have difficulty getting back into the U.S. The stoppage of play presented challenges for players, some of which rely on spring training camps for allowances, housing, meals and training facilities.

Over the five-month season, full-season minor league salaries range from $290 per week at Class A to $502 per week for Triple-A. Some players have turned to online fundraisers for support.
