Tebow clings to spot in the top 10

What to do with Tim Tebow? The reigning champ hasn't produced near the numbers he did through four games last season, and as a result, no player was tougher to rank in the fourth week of the Heisman Watch than last year's No. 1.

Last week: 36-of-43 passing, 439 yards, 2 TDs; 4 rushes, 16 yards in a 42-21 victory against Buffalo.Season: 101-of-133 passing, 1,412 yards, 12 TDs, 1 INT; 14 rushes, 74 yards.Heisman-o-meter: Every week Daniel seems to do something to top himself. This time he set a career high with 439 passing yards and broke a Big 12 record with 20 straight completions. "He brings his A-game every time he plays," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said afterward. And now Daniel, after a bye week, will enter the most important stretch of his Heisman campaign (and of the Tigers' season) with games at Nebraska, against Oklahoma State, at Texas and against Colorado.Up next: Oct. 4 at Nebraska.

Last week: Idle.Season: 64-of-81 passing, 882 yards, 12 TDs, 2 INTs; 4 rushes, 4 yards, 1 TD.Heisman-o-meter: The emergence of game-breaking receiver Ryan Broyles has helped Bradford, whose group of pass catchers is as good as any in the country. The nation should get a good read on just how viable a candidate Bradford is on Saturday when he faces a Horned Frogs team that leads the country in total defense and ranks sixth in scoring and 15th against the pass.Up next: Saturday vs. No. 24 TCU.

Last week: Idle.Season: 43-of-63 passing, 510 yards, 7 TDs, 2 INTs; 3 rushes, minus-4 yards.Heisman-o-meter: The Watch has not completely consumed the Sanchez Kool-Aid yet because there are a number of Trojans -- Joe McKnight, C.J. Gable and Stafon Johnson to name three -- who could easily be mentioned in this space as well. Sanchez has a prime-time opportunity to continue making his case this week against the Beavers.Up next: Thursday at Oregon State.

Last week: 14 receptions, 168 yards; 2 rushes, 25 yards, 1 TD; 1 punt return, 10 yards; 2 kickoff returns, 33 yards in a 42-21 victory against Buffalo.Season: 26 receptions, 391 yards, 4 TDs; 8 rushes, 43 yards, 1 TD; 12 punt returns, 123 yards; 7 kickoff returns, 217 yards, 1 TD.Heisman-o-meter: He fumbled on one of his receptions, but otherwise this was another typical all-around Maclin effort, which included a run around right end for his first rushing touchdown of the season. Last week I asked Tigers followers who they thought was better at what he does, Daniel or Maclin, and the returns were only slightly in favor of Daniel. Said Aaron from St. Louis: "Some of [Daniel's] success (and numbers) comes from the system he plays in. ... Maclin also thrives in this system, but you put him on any other team in any other system and he still would be a star."Up next: Oct. 4 at Nebraska.

Last week: 23 rushes, 149 yards, 2 TDs; 1 punt return, minus-2 yards in a 27-10 victory at Arizona State.Season: 69 rushes, 455 yards, 9 TDs; 7 receptions, 96 yards; 2 punt returns, 30 yards.Heisman-o-meter: The Watch was unfairly harsh on Moreno last week, knocking him off the list after a 79-yard day against South Carolina. So that was taken into consideration when ranking him this week. Against the Sun Devils, the Bulldogs' passing game (freshman A.J. Green could find himself on here one day) set up Moreno's two scores, and then in the second half he broke loose with a couple of big runs. The best news for Moreno was that the reworked offensive line seemed to open some holes.Up next: Saturday vs. No. 8 Alabama.

Last week: 39 rushes, 201 yards, 2 TDs; 1 reception, 0 yards; 1 kickoff return, 22 yards in a 23-7 victory against Notre Dame.Season: 143 rushes, 699 yards, 11 TDs; 4 receptions, 37 yards; 9 kickoff returns, 200 yards.Heisman-o-meter: Until he broke off a 63-yard run in the fourth quarter, this was a very businesslike effort. Ringer inched his way between the tackles for three, four, five yards at a time before finally busting the long one that helped seal the game. Ringer has shown he can be durable; his 143 carries lead the nation by 30.Up next: Saturday at Indiana.

Last week: 21 rushes, 132 yards; 2 receptions, 15 yards in a 26-21 victory at No. 10 Auburn.Season: 44 rushes, 394 yards, 4 TDs; 4 receptions, 37 yards.Heisman-o-meter: Lost in the LSU lovefest for Jarrett Lee coming out of Saturday's thriller at Auburn was the performance of Scott, who makes his debut on the Watch. Scott ripped off seven, eight, nine yards a pop in the second half against a nasty Auburn defense, and his physical inside running helped draw in defenders, allowing Lee to make those crucial throws. Scott's Heisman hopes will be hurt by LSU's depth at running back, but so far he has taken advantage of his touches (8.95 yards per carry).Up next: Saturday vs. Mississippi State.

Last week: 19-of-23 passing, 329 yards, 4 TDs; 8 rushes, 83 yards, 1 TD in a 52-10 victory against Rice.Season: 63-of-81 passing, 833 yards, 11 TDs, 1 INT; 25 rushes, 194 yards, 2 TDs; 1 punt, 44 yards.Heisman-o-meter: The Watch has always believed that McCoy, who had a lengthy stay on this list two years ago, is just as good as Daniel and better than Bradford because of his ability to keep plays alive with his feet; McCoy just needed to avoid interceptions. This season the Texas triggerman has been a deadeye from the pocket (just one interception) while still being a whirling dervish on the ground. On his 8-yard touchdown run against Rice, McCoy laid out two defenders who are still picking themselves off the ground. Let's see Daniel and Bradford do that.Up next: Saturday vs. Arkansas.

Last week: 16-of-27 passing, 189 yards, 3 TDs in a 44-0 victory against Wyoming.Season: 107-of-144 passing, 1,284 yards, 15 TDs, 2 INTs; 6 rushes, 16 yards, 1 TD.Heisman-o-meter: After a slow start against the Cowboys (3-of-8 passing, 19 yards), Hall warmed up in the second quarter, hitting Austin Collie perfectly in stride down the right sideline for a 62-yard touchdown. The Watch will reserve moving Hall up until the competition level increases, particularly on Oct. 16 against TCU and Nov. 22 at Utah.Up next: Oct. 3 at Utah State.

Last week: 8-of-15 passing, 96 yards, 2 TDs; 12 rushes, 26 yards in a 30-6 victory at Tennessee.Season: 38-of-64 passing, 489 yards, 5 TDs; 34 rushes, 118 yards.Heisman-o-meter: If the Watch existed in a vacuum and 2007 hadn't happened, Tebow wouldn't be on this list because, quite frankly, his 2008 résumé just doesn't stack up. His Gators are simply better this year so he has not been needed to pull out his Tebowoics. But 2007 is still easy to remember so we know the things of which Tebow is capable, which is why the reigning winner is still on here in place of, say, Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree or Wisconsin's P.J. Hill. He wouldn't even sniff the Heisman ballot through four games, but with showdowns against LSU and Georgia on the horizon, Tebow can still make some noise in this race.Up next: Saturday vs. Mississippi.
