Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has fired his estranged wife, Jamie, from her position as the team's chief executive, triggering what her attorney said would be an imminent legal response. While Frank McCourt is pressing ahead with the business of the team, including Tuesday's announcement of a long-term contract extension for General Manager Ned Colletti, Jamie McCourt is believed to be lining up investors for a possible effort to buy her husband out and gain sole control of the team. In addition, she was believed to have started calling prominent baseball figures, with the intention of arranging meetings to discuss the direction of the team. (Los Angeles Times)Comment
Arenas shuts down blog
The invitation Gilbert Arenas once freely offered is firmly withdrawn, as is the quirky and unfiltered glimpse at one of the N.B.A.'s more intriguing personalities. The greeting came from one of Arenas's first blog posts in 2006. It arrived before three knee operations, two lost seasons and the signing of a $111 million contract. As the migration of professional athletes who open their personal lives via networking sites grows, Arenas has headed the other way. His blog is shuttered. He does not have a Twitter page. But more than that, Napa County District Attorney Gary Lieberstein said that Raiders assistant coach Randy Hanson couldn't satisfactorily explain to Lieberstein's conviction rate how his jaw was broken. Lieberstein was critical of Hanson's inability or unwillingness to speak fully when asked about the incident. He was not so bothered by the fact that the other witnesses all work for the Raiders and are inclined to seek and defend their own self-interest, re: continued employment. But he was clear on the main reason why he didn't want it. It's a no-win proposition for him, and as any self-respecting D.A. will tell you, no-win propositions are to be avoided at all costs.
