Top candidate to replace Charlie Weis is...
The Charlie Weis era appears to be fading into the sunset in South Bend. The Irish's new athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, told reporters over the weekend that the six years remaining on Weis's gigantic contract would not influence his job status. There have been multiple and varied reports of just how much a buyout of Weis's contract would be. (The Sporting News reported $18 million on Sunday.) The top candidate to replace Weis would probably be Cincinnati Coach Brian Kelly. (New York Times)Comment
Red may trade Phillips or Arroyo
It's telling that when asked last week if he needed to cut player payroll to balance the budget, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said "not yet." The implication is that it could happen. It probably depends on how season-ticket renewals go. I'm told that early renewals are promising. But if that trend doesn't continue, and the Reds have to slash payroll to make budget, it means they may have to trade Brandon Phillips or Bronson Arroyo. (Cincinnati Enquirer)Comment
Hall of Famers choose Manning over Brady
There are 20 living quarterbacks in the Professional Football Hall of Fame. We tracked them all down and asked: if you had to choose between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning to quarterback your team, who would you pick and why? When pressed to decide, the tally was 13 1/2-2 1/2, with four abstaining. Manning's work ethic and level of preparation provided the swing factor for several of the Hall of Famers.
