Bettis: Cowher covets Giants job
Bill Cowher wants to be the next head coach of the Giants. At least, he does according to Jerome Bettis, Cowher's former running back with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bettis said the reason Cowher hasn't returned to coach is because he's "holding out" for the Giants job to open up. In fact, he told Chris "Mad Dog" Russo on Sirius XM's Mad Dog Radio that Cowher would have gotten the Giants' job in 2008 if Tom Coughlin hadn't taken the Giants on that magical, Super Bowl XLII run. Omar Minaya's absence from Thursday's conference call certainly was another sign that ownership no longer trusts him to be their front man, that he's a lame-duck GM whose powers have been significantly reduced. The GM took another hit last night when Carlos Beltran released a statement proclaiming innocence, saying he had spoken to Minaya a day before his surgery, at which time the GM offered him no indication the club was against it. Pistons prepared to make more trades
Joe Dumars broke up the Detroit Pistons when he was convinced they were no longer an Eastern Conference power. Now that Detroit's record is among the worst in the league, the team's president of basketball operations sounds like he's ready to make more moves over the next month. ``We will not be averse to being active before the trading deadline,'' Dumars said.
