Cubs mulling Soriano release?

Might one of the most disappointing Cubs be on the move? The Chicago Cubs owe Alfonso Soriano $18 million a year for the next five years and the team is already unhappy with the return on its investment. As it is now, Soriano is getting pulled in the late innings for a defensive replacement. While his defense has always been suspect, now his offensive numbers are down, too, and ESPN is reporting that there is a 50/50 chance that Soriano won't make it to the end of his contract with the team. Instead, the Cubs are likely to try to trade him and eventually release him somewhere along the way. Of course, Cubs fans can cling to the hope that maybe Soriano will get better. (Yahoo! What's next in Philly?

Now that Eddie Jordan has been removed in Philly, speculation heats up over whether the GM will be next. Listening to President and General Manager Ed Stefanski's press conference this morning at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine was an interesting experience because of his tenuous grip on his own job. Let's address the next step of this equation, the step before the question of exactly who will replace Jordan as Sixers head coach. The next step is: Should Stefanski be allowed to select this franchise's next head coach? Will Stefanski be allowed to? Or is he only a couple of weeks from joining Jordan? As of this moment, according to a source close to Stefanski, he is operating in his same capacity as GM and, right now, he will begin this coaching search with the same authority he had a year ago. That could change. (Philadelphia Inquirer)Comment

Mizzou's Anderson met with Oregon

Oregon's search for a basketball head coach may be narrowing on one candidate. Former Oregon athletic director Pat Kilkenny, leading the search for the Ducks new basketball coach and believed to be in pursuit of Missouri's Mike Anderson, was in El Paso, Texas, on Thursday night, and The Oregonian has confirmed that Anderson and Kilkenny met in person to discuss the job. Anderson is in El Paso, where he is scheduled to participate in the Nolan Richardson Charity Golf Tournament, in support of Richardson, his former mentor at Arkansas. Kilkenny flew directly to El Paso after leaving New York on Thursday afternoon. The two are checked into hotels across the street from each other. (The Oregonian)Comment
