It appears as if the Raptors are willing to operate differently to re-sign their top player. [The Raptors] are going to make a last-ditch effort to re-sign franchise forward Chris Bosh with a pitch that includes not only a maximum contract offer, but also a promise that the club is willing to spend considerable luxury-tax dollars for the first time in an attempt to compete with the top teams in the Eastern Conference. ... "The plan ??? is to win basketball games at whatever cost and whatever extent," Raptors president Bryan Colangelo said. "The board is fully committed to doing whatever it takes to put a winning team on the floor. That includes re-signing Chris Bosh. That includes exceeding the tax limit." Odds are Green Bay won't be selecting a halfback later this week. Packers General Manager Ted Thompson takes an interesting approach to halfbacks in the NFL draft. He all but ignores them. In four of his five drafts in Green Bay, Thompson hasn't selected a halfback. Out of his 51 total Packers' draft picks, only two have been halfbacks, and both were taken in 2007 -- Brandon Jackson in the second round and DeShawn Wynn in the seventh round. That same year Thompson traded a 2008 sixth-round pick to the New York Giants for Ryan Grant, the Packers' current starter. (Green Bay Press Gazette)Comment
Could Ripken join Orioles' staff?
Of all the former stars working for teams with which they're associated, why isn't Cal Ripken in Baltimore? A number of former Orioles -- including Hall of Famers Jim Palmer and Eddie Murray -- serve the club as paid broadcasters, but the O's need to draw from their tradition in ways that go beyond Boog Powell cooking ribs on Eutaw Street. It's damning -- and a direct reflection on Angelos' tone-deaf ownership -- that Hall of Famers Ripken, Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson are nowhere to be found at Camden Yards. ...
