Eddie Gaedel
In another of Bill Veeck's publicity stunts, 3-foot-7 Eddie Gaedel returns to a major league field along with three other little people. Arriving by helicopter and dressed as Martians, the quartet shake hands with Nellie Fox and Luis Aparicio near second base on Comiskey Park's infield and give them toy ray guns to help Fox and Aparicio "in their struggle with giant earthlings."
Harvey Haddix
Pirates' hurler Harvey Haddix pitches 12 perfect innings, but loses 1-0 to the Braves in the 13th. The heartbreaking winning run scores on a Don Hoak error, a sacrifice, a walk and a double by Joe Adcock.
Larry Bird
Boston's Larry Bird steals an inbounds pass from Detroit's Isiah Thomas and passes to a cutting Dennis Johnson for the winning basket as the Celtics pulled out an improbable 108-107 win over Detroit in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers win their fourth NHL Stanley Cup in five seasons, sweeping the series 4-0 against the Boston Bruins.
Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain
The Bill Russell Tribute is held at the Fleet Center in Boston in a ceremony to salute the Hall of Famer. The ceremony was hosted by entertainer Bill Cosby and featured a star-studded lineup including Wilt Chamberlain (left), former Celtics greats and other sports legends.
