Red Sox eyeing streaky catcher Ianetta
Theo Epstein, awaiting many happy returns from the DL, may not feel comfortable sitting on his hands. He quipped that the Sox will "look like the "'27 Yankees" when all the injured players return, and that could be true, but trying to bridge -- there we ago again with that word -- the next two weeks before all that happens is the tricky part. The Sox have been in talks with many teams, said Epstein, and the latest name attached to them is catcher Chris Iannetta, the Rhode Islander who played his high school ball at St. Rafael Academy, a short distance from McCoy Stadium. ... Lured back to the Jets by Rex Ryan, Kris Jenkins is aiming for a $50,000 making-weight bonus and for the team to live up to the hype. With HBO filming the Jets for its annual training camp series, with Ryan's pronouncements growing bolder in his second season, with expectations that have grown exponentially, Jenkins and the Jets feel a greater sense of urgency. "When you have magnified expectations in New York, you better get it done," he said. "We've got to win. There's no if. We have to win. Trash has been talked. Things have been said. Kings missed on Kovalchuk -- but won
Los Angeles took its best shot, reportedly $80 million, and lost Ilya Kovalchuk -- while possibly winning. [The Kings] were smart not to go any further. As for what's next? There's no rush to Plan B. Los Angeles has inquired about Tomas Kaberle, but Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke wants an established forward in return. As the Team USA Olympic GM, it wouldn't be surprising if Burke asked for Dustin Brown in a package. That's not happening. Maybe, they'll call Chicago about Patrick Sharp or Boston about Marc Savard. ... But if we've learned nothing else during the Kovalchuk saga, it's that the Kings won't rush.
