Seems there would be some irony to a Lakers three-peat, which Magic Johnson believes will play out, at the expense of Pat Reilly's Heat. "The Lakers still have the most talent," he said. "They're the best team in the NBA." But that could change in a year or two, Johnson suggested. He said Miami needs at least a season for its new roster to get used to playing together. Mainstays such as Wade, guard Mario Chalmers and forward Udonis Haslem remain, but seven new players have filled out the roster with another spot open. "You've got to remember they're going to have [eight] new guys," Johnson said. "They lose this year; Lakers win. I think that team may win two or three in a row" later. (Los Angeles Times)Comment
Bulluck: 'Absurd' to write off Giants
Keith Bulluck sure knows how to endear himself to the local fans. He just can't believe how so many people are dismissing it as a potential contender in the NFC East. "The (Giants) have talent, and they brought in talent," Bulluck, the newest Giant, said Monday on a conference call. "I know this team as a whole has something to prove. (But) for everyone to be talking about Dallas, Washington, and Philadelphia and not talking about Big Blue is absurd." It seems a little bit more so now that the Giants finally filled their most gaping hole on defense when they signed the 33-year-old Bulluck to be their middle linebacker. (New York Daily News)Comment
Will Lackey throw at his old mates?
David Ortiz hit two home runs on Monday, setting the stage for a bit of drama not much later. When Ortiz homered in the eighth inning, Fernando Rodney drilled Adrian Beltre with a 97-mph fastball two pitches later. Beltre just stood there and stared out at the mound for nearly 30 seconds before walking slowly to first base. The umpires than warned both benches. Terry Francona said that's a bad rule ... Teams should be allowed to take care of business themselves. John Lackey will face his old teammates in the second game of the series and it's a good bet that somebody gets a heater in the back.
