Gardenhire: 'I'd be booing too'
Ron Gardenhire was thinking more about Kevin Slowey's arm than his place in history. "I'd be booing, too," Gardenhire said. "I want to see a no-hitter myself, but I also know that I'm responsible for this young man's arm, and we were going to protect him no matter what." Slowey needed 106 pitches to get through seven innings. He was making his first start since Aug. 5, when he threw a season-high 114 pitches in a start at Tampa Bay. He missed his next scheduled start -- last Wednesday at Chicago -- because of elbow tendinitis. "I'm not going to let him throw 125-130 pitches; it's just not going to happen," Gardenhire said. Fitzgerald: Don't write me off just yet
Though according to reports that the Cardinals will be careful with Larry Fitzgerald's sprained MCL, he's aiming to be ready for Week 1. "They say they want to be careful with it so it doesn't linger and ... I'm ready to go for week one at St. Louis. It's frustrating because I was having my best camp as a pro." Fitzgerald said his weight was down and he was looking forward to a monster year. He still is. "I will be fine and rehabbing and getting ready as fast as possible. Don't write me off just yet." Can Isiah deliver Carmelo to Knicks?
Isiah Thomas may still have a hand in bringing Carmelo Anthony, whose Team USA jersey Spike Lee wore courtside in Sunday's exhibition game at Madison Square Garden, to New York City. It is Thomas' thinking that if he can land Anthony or a player such as New Orleans point guard Chris Paul, it will enhance his tarnished image among Knicks fans and potentially clear the way for him to return to take over the club again. [James] Dolan's telling statement last Wednesday all but guarantees Thomas playing a role. "I continue to believe in his basketball knowledge, including his ability to judge talent," Dolan said.
