Morning Jolt: What's behind Damon's decision?

Wednesday, August 25

Today's must-see content delivered straight to you.

What's behind Damon's spurning of Sox?

Despite the idea of returning to Boston, Johnny Damon didn't want back in the Fenway fold. Were the Sox that insulting? Did they look Damon in the eye and tell him that they thought Coco Crisp was a better player? Did John Henry, Tom Werner, and Larry Lucchino tell Damon he was lucky when he hit those two homers in Game 7 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium? Did Shonda Schilling say something insulting about Michelle Damon's scarves? Think about it: For the next five weeks, you could live in downtown Boston and your wife could shop on Newbury Street. Or you could live in downtown Detroit, amid the boarded-up buildings and the proverbial skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets. Is this really a tough call? Really. Why wouldn't Damon come back to Boston? (The Boston Globe)Comment

McNabb out, 'Skins scramble

Donovan McNabb's ankle injury has thrown a wrench into not only his own plans, but also those of the Redskins offense under Mike Shanahan, who said Tuesday it would "prevent him from playing a regular season game." McNabb sprained his left ankle in Saturday's preseason loss to Baltimore, and he came out of the locker room at halftime with it heavily wrapped. He wore a walking boot Monday morning, an air cast Monday afternoon, and though he was walking on a treadmill Tuesday, he could not practice. ... McNabb was not available to comment Monday or Tuesday, when the team held practices in which backups Rex Grossman, John Beck and Richard Bartel took snaps in preparation for the Jets. A new No. 1 back at USC?

A number of position battles will be settled Saturday by Lane Kiffin, including his starting running back. [Marc] Tyler, fit for the first time in his Trojans career, appears to have displaced Allen Bradford, the No. 1 tailback entering training camp. "I feel like I got that juice back," said Tyler, a fourth-year junior who has struggled to overcome injuries and regain the form that made him a star at Westlake Village Oaks Christian High. Tyler said he had not been told he was the starter. ... Bradford is nursing a left knee bruise suffered last week. The fifth-senior also has been handicapped some by Kiffin's no-tackling policy, which has ostensibly kept more players healthy but not afforded the power-running Bradford much of an opportunity to impress by punishing the defense.
