Publicly, Sean Payton praised Brett Favre prior to the NFC championship game. Privately, though, Payton's message was different. On the Saturday before the game, he met with the players and focused his message on the Vikings' three-time MVP quarterback. "When you get older in life, you tend to get very careful, and a little more fearful," Payton said, according to players and staffers who were there. "You start thinking about your own mortality. If it rains outside you might not go to the store, especially at night. You figure you'll just wait it out. You might have somewhere to go and you tell yourself I don't want to go there. You don't want to get in a wreck. If you keep hitting him (on Sunday) he'll make a mistake." (The Times-Picayune)Comment
Another installment of Where Melo Turns. Carmelo Anthony still hopes to persuade the Denver Nuggets to trade him, preferably to either the Chicago Bulls or New York Knicks, an NBA source with knowledge of Anthony's wishes told Yahoo! Sports. The Knicks have limited assets to offer the Nuggets, which makes the Bulls a more appealing potential trade partner. The Bulls can offer a replacement small forward in Luol Deng, as well as two young forwards in James Johnson and Taj Gibson. New York officials would like to make a run at signing Anthony next summer if he were to opt to become a free agent. ... While Anthony would prefer a trade to either the Bulls or Knicks, he knows the Nuggets could decide to send him elsewhere. (Yahoo! Sports)Comment
Cubs minor league manager Ryne Sandberg will reportedly be among several candidates the team will interview within the next 10. Other known candidates include former Florida Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, who will also have a meeting with Cubs general manager Jim Hendry during that same time period, according to the source. Former Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge most likely will go through a second interview over the next month as well. Cubs interim manager Mike Quade also is on the list of candidates to be interviewed. It's unknown whether Joe Girardi will be a factor for the Cubs' job because of his contractual obligations to the New York Yankees. (ESPNChicago.com)Comment
