Wayne Gretzky scores his first NHL goal. The Great One would retire in 1999 with 894 goals, 1,963 assists and 2,857 total points.

Kirk Gibson

With the Tigers leading 5-4 in the eighth inning of Game 5 of the World Series, Kirk Gibson hits his second home run of the game, a three-run blast to the upper deck in right field, putting the game out of reach and giving the Motor City its fourth World Championship in franchise history.

Joe Namath

The Jets retire Joe Namath's No 12 jersey and beat Miami, 23-7, on Monday Night Football.

Joe Montana and Jerry Rice

In a 45-35 victory over Atlanta, San Francisco's Joe Montana passes for 476 yards and six touchdowns. Five of the touchdowns are thrown to Jerry Rice, who finishes the day with 13 receptions for 225 yards.

Warren Moon

Houston quarterback Warren Moon passes for 369 yards and five touchdowns as the Oilers beat Cincinnati 48-17. Moon becomes the first person to throw for over 20,000 yards in two different leagues (he passed for 21,228 yards in the Canadian Football League).

Steve Bartman

Holding a 3-0 lead and needing only five more outs to go the World Series for the first time since 1945, the Cubs give up eight runs, on five hits, three walks and an error to the Marlins. The team appears to come apart after a fan named Steve Bartman, sitting along the left-field line at Wrigley Field, tries to catch a foul ball that was about to be caught by Cubs' outfielder Moises Alou for the second out of the inning.
