Wife doesn't want Calhoun to quit
If you were going by contract, Jim Calhoun has until 2014 on the sidelines, but the fairy tale would have a title run at a career's end. [Calhoun], three times a national champion now, can ride off into the sunset and never look back if he likes. Will he, or won't he? Even his wife is not sure. "My gut feeling is that he'll walk away -- some day," his wife, Pat, said with a chuckle, after UConn beat Butler, 53-41 in the NCAA championship game last night. "I never want Jim to retire, unless his wants to retire. He won't make any decision now, I know that for sure." Pressed, she said: "I think it's be a great exit plan, but it's not my exit plan, so . . . " Pat Calhoun has been married to her basketball-lifer husband, a three-time cancer survivor, for 44 years. Her husband will turn 69 next month. "Honestly, it's been our life for so many years, and it's been a good life," she said. (New York Post)Comment
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said over the weekend he will show limited patience with his pitching staff. [Left-handed] starter Scott Kazmir and numerous Angels relievers struggled as the team dropped three of four games in its season-opening series in Kansas City. Kazmir, who threw 63 pitches in 1 2/3 innings Sunday, will make at least one more start, according to a major-league source. But Kazmir, who also is coming off a poor spring, is on "a short leash," multiple sources say. The Angels can demote Kazmir only if he agrees to the move -- players with five years of service cannot be sent to the minors without their consent. Releasing Kazmir would cost the Angels the remainder of his $12 million salary in 2011, plus his $2.5 million buyout for '12. (FOXSports.com)Comment
Love: I'll probably re-sign in 2012
In what amounted to a state-of-Love address, Kevin Love talked Monday about his present and future in Minnesota. [Love] said he would be sure to gauge interest elsewhere before making a decision. Under current rules, the Wolves would have the right to match if Love signed an offer sheet with another team in 2012. "You have to weigh your options," he said. "If there is a better opportunity out there, you have to look at your situation and see what's going to be best for me. ... But also, sometimes you have to go with your heart. When you break it down like that, it really could go either way. But if everything works out right here, I'll probably be here." On [Kurt] Rambis' future: Love said he supported Rambis, but agreed with teammate Anthony Tolliver, who recently said he wasn't sure all the players had bought into Rambis' system.
