Jimmer a possibility for Knicks?
The Knicks already engineered the addition of one New York native (maybe you heard about that one), so why not adding another through the draft? Jimmer Fredette likes the Knicks' up-tempo offense, and the BYU star grew up a Knicks fan. Thursday, Fredette was the top prospect at the team's private workout in Greenburgh, but don't expect the Knicks to take the pride of Glens Falls, N.Y., with the 17th pick in this month's NBA draft. The Knicks may have missed their chance, and besides, Fredette may not be an ideal fit. After Thursday's workout, Fredette said the Knicks could likely have grabbed him a year ago, if only they had given him a guarantee that they would select him. (New York Daily News)Comment
Cooley: 'Skins have QB in mind
Count Chris Cooley among so many who believe the Redskins will soon be a little thin at quarterback. With Donovan McNabb likely out of the picture, John Beck is basically the starter by default, although free agent Rex Grossman hopes to re-sign and compete for the starting job. Appearing on NFL Network Wednesday, Cooley complemented both Beck and Grossman but said the Redskins' quarterback picture remains undecided. With veteran quarterbacks like Matt Hasselbeck and Vince Young available, Cooley expects the Redskins to explore other possibilities. ... "Obviously we're going to have to bring someone else in. ... Obviously, they passed on a lot of guys they had a chance to draft. So either they really like John Beck and Rex Grossman, or they have someone else in mind." (Sporting News)Comment
Nine teams in financial trouble?
The Dodgers and New York Mets are stealing headlines as baseball's big-market financial headaches, but they reportedly are not alone. Nine of the 30 teams are in violation of the MLB debt service rules, according to information presented in a confidential briefing at the owners' meetings last month and confirmed to The Times by three people familiar with the presentation. In addition to the Dodgers and Mets, the teams out of compliance are the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Florida Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals, according to the people, none of whom were authorized to disclose the information.
