Tony La Russa has made an offseason habit of keeping Cardinals fans guessing, and perhaps the time is nearing that he walks. By trading the occasionally electrifying Colby Rasmus in a short-sighted move that brought them Edwin Jackson, [the Cardinals] have turned up the volume on an already pressurized situation. And they may have quietly telegraphed the end of the Tony La Russa era in St. Louis. La Russa's close friendship with White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf long has suggested they will work together again in the future. The Sox's curious handling of the Jackson trade suggests this reunion could begin in 2012, assuming Ozzie Guillen gets money-whipped to jump to the Marlins after this season. (Chicago Tribune)Comment
Artest headed to UK to talk transfer
So, England may not be the longshot, along with Finland, that his agent made it out to be. NBA superstar Ron Artest is heading to the UK for transfer talks after agreeing to play for Cheshire Jets. The LA Lakers forward -- one of the best players in world basketball -- has been in negotiations for weeks with directors of the Chester-based club over appearing for them during the ongoing NBA 'lockout'. ... In a moment of opportunism earlier this month, Jets made an enquiry about luring Artest to the UK -- and, incredibly, he is willing to come over and play for them. Now the two parties have agreed to meet face-to-face to thrash out the finer details of what would surely be the biggest transfer coup in British basketball history. (Chester Chronicle)Comment
Tebow a long way from starting
Rut-roh. Kyle Orton not only remains the Broncos' starting quarterback, the first training camp workout of the 2011 season [Thursday] showed that Tim Tebow is a long way from giving the incumbent much competition. Orton was his usual polished self, always knowing which of the receivers was open, and hitting them with precision. The Orton-Brandon Lloyd connections down the field picked up where they left off in 2010. Tebow got just as many reps, but was a tick slower in reading how the play developed and his passes weren't nearly as precise. "We've got to work on some timing with certain things, but for a first day, I thought it was pretty good," Tebow said. Orton's closest competitor [Thursday] was veteran Brady Quinn.
