Pujols would stay if Cards hire this man ...

With Tony La Russa's retirement came the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one: wondering how it affects Albert Pujols. The quick answer was that the development would have a negative impact on the Cardinals' efforts to re-sign Pujols, who became a world champion on Friday and a free agent on Sunday. By nightfall, though, the forecast for Pujols' return had improved considerably. ... David Eckstein, who played with Pujols for three seasons in St. Louis, told me in a Monday interview that he believes Pujols will return to the Cardinals if they hire third-base coach Jose Oquendo as their new manager. "Albert would stay if Oquendo got the job," Eckstein said. (FOXSports.com)Comment

CJ2K sharing carries but keeping job

It's a pretty safe bet Chris Johnson won't be running for 2,000 yards this season, especially not when he's splitting carries, though Mike Munchak said Monday CJ2K hasn't lost his starter's job. Even though Johnson and backup Javon Ringer had the same number of carries against the Colts, the coach said that doesn't mean it will happen again this Sunday when the Titans (4-3) play the Bengals (5-2) at LP Field. "It's no different than it was last week. C.J. is the starter, like he has been. He will start the game, and Javon will roll in there, depending on how the things go," Munchak said. "Nothing has changed. We don't feel any different about Chris Johnson. We still believe in him." (The Tennessean)Comment

Cap agreement favors Knicks landing superstar

The bad news for James Dolan is the lockout, but there is some good news for the Knicks owner. [Dolan] is content about one of the agreed-upon aspects of a new collective bargaining agreement: the size of the salary cap will not go down. More than any team in the NBA, that will benefit Dolan's big-market Knicks the most, ironically. According to multiple sources, one of the resolved issues in a new CBA is the 2011 cap will remain at the level as it was in 2010 -- $58 million. ... [Sources] say the salary cap will then grow to about $60 to $61 million in 2012 -- when the Knicks will have the largest cap space in the league and have room to woo either Chris Paul, Deron Williams or Dwight Howard.
