Prior to this season, it seemed Rex Ryan reserved his creativity for the Jets' defense. He has always stirred the pot on defense. But in the week leading up to the Jets' comeback victory on Sunday in Washington, Ryan decided to fiddle with the offense and suggested to coordinator Brian Schottenheimer that the team go more often with the wildcat formation. It was a strategy that succeeded on a modest scale, after requiring a considerable amount of preparation. "It was a difficult week of practice," said guard Matt Slausen. ... The change was an indication of just how far Ryan and his coaches have been willing to go in recent weeks to turn around what seemed an almost hopeless cause after the loss to the Broncos. With one report indicating Mark Buehrle has at least a dozen suitors, the free agent lefty's chances of returning to Chicago may be growing longer, but that didn't stop Robin Ventura from making his pitch. [Ventura] said he ran into [Buehrle] a couple of weeks ago in New York. Having been a free agent himself, Ventura knows the emotions Buehrle is dealing with, so he made a modest effort to convince him to stay with the Sox. "I made my case in person to him," Ventura said at the winter meetings Monday. "I just wanted him to know what I thought of him and what he's meant to the organization." And Buehrle's reaction? "He just smiled, kind of laughed," Ventura said. "I didn't expect anything different. He gets it. I get it, too." (Chicago Sun-Times)Comment
Portland has $15M decision on Roy
In the eyes of many, Portland will do the right thing with Brandon Roy. Barring an injury setback before the season starts, the Trail Blazers will not use the "amnesty clause" on [Roy] this season, team president Larry Miller told The Oregonian late Monday evening. "Our plan right now is not to use the amnesty," Miller said. ... Because Roy has $63 million remaining on his contract, and no longer has cartilage in either knee, some forecasted that the Blazers would waive the three-time All-Star even though he was the face of the franchise. Waiving Roy would save owner Paul Allen more than $15 million in luxury tax this season and would enable the Blazers to have more free agent money in this year's market. (The Oregonian)Comment
