Michigan, Illinois win NCAA gymnastics qualifiers

Big Ten rivals Michigan and Illinois won their qualifying sessions Friday at the NCAA men's gymnastics meet to advance to the six-team final round.

Top-seeded Oklahoma, No. 2 seed Penn State, defending champion Stanford and California also made it to Saturday night's championship round.

Illinois had the highest qualifying score of the day at 356.25 and edged out host Oklahoma by five-hundredths of a point to win the evening session. California (351.15) easily beat out Minnesota (343.35) for the third qualifying spot.

Michigan (353.45) won the early session by less than a half-point over Penn State (353). Stanford (348.5) beat out Ohio State (345.35) for the other spot in the finals.
