Rex gushes over ... Tom Brady

So much for the vitriol that often accompanies a Patriots-Jets game, as Rex Ryan had some kind words for Tom Brady on Tuesday. "The thing about him, he's a machine yet he's passionate and a fiery leader. You wish he was just a machine. His competitive side elevates his team as well. That's what you get from those once-in-a-generation-type quarterbacks." ... [The Jets held New England in check for much of their meeting in October], but Brady found his stride late in the game, driving his offense to a game-tying field goal then setting up another kick from Stephen Gostkowski for the winner in overtime. "When it mattered most, he delivered and got the victory," Ryan said. (New York Daily News)Comment

Lohse on Boston's radar (along with everyone else)

The Red Sox are hard at work these days, even if there haven't been any acquisitions. While we haven't heard much on the Red Sox front since they engaged in trade talks with Miami for Jose Reyes and Josh Johnson, other GMs inform me the Red Sox have been very active in trying to make something happen. The Sox are trying to make a trade that would land them either a starting pitcher/shortstop/outfielder and are trying to sign a first baseman/ starting pitcher. Names? There aren't many guys they haven't engaged in some level of talks with. ... [Kyle Lohse] had a great year and yes, the Red Sox have called about him. At 34, he may be a bit out of their age range. He's probably looking for at least three years and that may be risky. (The Boston Globe)Comment

Rivers: 'No idea' what record Rondo's chasing

Doc Rivers, after a practice Tuesday, insisted he did not know the particulars of Rajon Rondo's assist streak, which now stands at 34 straight games. "I don't even know what it is, I swear to gosh," Rivers said. "I have no idea what he's chasing. I just hear that he's got a streak going. Who is he chasing? I don't even know that." Magic Johnson owns the NBA record of 46 straight games with 10-plus assists. Rondo trails John Stockton by three games. Rondo extended the streak in Sunday's 103-83 loss to the Pistons. Rondo recorded his 10th assist with 51 seconds left in the game. The streak would have ended had Rivers not sent Rondo back out in fourth-quarter garbage time. "We were getting blown out, and I just told him, 'Stay in and get it.'" (The Boston Globe)Comment
