Bills' Johnson calls out Pats secondary
Week 1 is on the horizon, and Stevie Johnson may be on the bulletin board in New England. [Johnson] declared himself uncoverable in Sunday's game against the New England Patriots. "I don't think they got nobody that can stop me," Johnson said [Monday] afternoon at One Bills Drive. "For real." Johnson's never at a loss for confidence. He has been successful against NFL's best cornerbacks, particularly Darrelle Revis. Johnson and his fellow Bills receivers will face a talented group of cornerbacks in Aqib Talib, Alfonso Dennard and Kyle Arrington. "They're athletic," Johnson said. "I give a lot of credit to the New England Patriots. I haven't played against Aqib Talib yet. I've checked him out on tape, long, athletic, try to play with vision. They play as one unit." If Nick Marshall proved anything in his first start, it's that he can manage Auburn's hurry-up, no-huddle offense. Now the Tigers need Marshall to start making the big play. After a chance to watch the film of Auburn's 31-24 win over Washington State, offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee came away impressed. ... Teammates raved about Marshall's big-play ability during training camp. Now that he's proven he can take care of the football, Auburn needs its quarterback and receivers to take advantage of the golden opportunities the Tigers missed Saturday. "Those opportunities that we have to capitalize on, once we get those fixed, he's going to be a lot more relaxed back there," tight end C.J. Uzomah said. Payton: MJ easier to guard than Stockton
Gary Payton still has a Hall of Fame speech to finish, and, in the run-up to his induction, the point guard called John Stockton the "hardest person I ever had to guard." [Q:] Even so, you once said you were better than Stockton? A: "I was. I really think I was better as an athlete and in everything all-around. But he was just a smarter basketball player than us. He just got it done. I do think I was a better basketball player." ... Q: You say Stockton was the hardest to guard, but what about guarding Michael Jordan? A: "Those battles were a little easier. I would have Jordan get mad at me and go back at me. He knew he was really talented and could do whatever he wanted to. - 1981 -- Boston's Jerry Remy records six hits in 10 at bats during the Red Sox's 20-inning victory over the Mariners.
- 2000 -- Duce Staley rushes for 201 yards and a touchdown to lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a 41-14 rout of the Dallas Cowboys. Staley is the Eagles' first 200-yard runner since Steve Van Buren in 1949.
- 2006 -- Philadelphia's Ryan Howard belts three home runs and becomes the first Phillies player to hit 50 home runs in a season.
