Playbook too big for Kaepernick?
With a varied offensive playbook and a good many formations, the 49ers' offensive playbook can give defenses fits. But it can also cause its share of problems for the 49ers' offense. The 49ers called four timeouts on offense Sunday against the Green Bay Packers with the play clock winding down. They were also flagged for one delay-of-game penalty in the 34-28 season-opening victory. On at least two occasions, the 49ers had troubles lining up in a legal formation. Coach Jim Harbaugh intimated that the 49ers might consider paring down the number of plays in each week's game plan to avoid such problems in the future. ... The 49ers had to learn new verbiage last week, too. The 49ers also made some alterations to the terminology quarterback Colin Kaepernick used at the line of scrimmage against the Packers. Manziel is Saban's kind of player?
On the surface, Johnny Manziel doesn't much seem like Nick Saban's kind of player. Too anti-establishment. Too cocky and mouthy. Too much of an unpredictable free spirit for the most detailed and disciplined coach in the sport. A wrench in the process waiting to happen. ... I can't remember hearing Saban use the phrase "fierce competitor" about an opposing player with as much conviction as he did in tossing that compliment at Manziel. ... "I have not seen him get rattled in a game," Saban said. "I really haven't. And I think the guy's a great competitor and regardless of any other circumstance that goes on around him, when he's playing on the field he's doing everything he can to try to make his team win and trying to make every choice and decision to do it and he is a fierce competitor." Have we seen Jeter's last game?
With Mariano Rivera, we've known since this past March he was retiring, and he reiterated that stance only a week ago. But there are now scenarios developing in which the remainder of the Core Four also could call it a career. Both Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte said they want to table discussions about the future until after the season, particularly not to bring personal matters into the Yankees' playoff quest. I still expect Jeter to play in 2014, but I do have some hesitancy after several members of the team said they could see the shortstop walking away rather than messing with his legacy if he does not believe he can get vitality back in his legs. And after implying in spring training he had his sights set beyond just 2013, Pettitte now speaks of having to make a decision. (New York Post)Comment
