Something to keep an eye on Thursday night when Rex Ryan and Bill Belichick meet at midfield to kick off Week 2 action? On Tuesday's edition of NFL Network's "NFL Total Access," NFL Media's LaDainian Tomlinson recalled a pep talk the Jets coach gave to his players before a showdown between the AFC East rivals. "We were playing the Patriots one time, and as I mentioned, Rex is a master motivator," said Tomlinson, who played under Ryan in 2010 and 2011. "It was going to be a big game, a heated rivalry game, and Rex got in front of us, he said, 'I'm going to set the tempo today, guys,' he said, 'I'm going to set the tempo when I meet Bill Belichick in the center of the field, I'm gonna start it off and punch him in the face.' Manziel advised to not talk this week
One of college football's most anticipated games of the season -- if not the past year -- won't have Johnny Manziel's comments to fuel the fire. The Texas A&M quarterback opted not to speak with reporters during Tuesday's weekly interview sessions. He addressed questions after the Aggies win over Sam Houston State on Saturday, but not on game week entering Saturday's 2:30 p.m. meeting with No. 1 Alabama. "Quite frankly, he and his family and his advisers, his lawyers and family have advised him not to talk and I'll respect his wishes for that," Aggie coach Kevin Sumlin told reporters in College Station. "There will be a time when he'll be able to speak to the media. In that sense, I'm going to respect his request not to speak to the media at this time. Scherzer's poor starts open AL Cy Young race
Going back only a few weeks, Detroit's Max Scherzer, when he outdueled Matt Harvey, appeared to have the AL Cy Young race locked up with his 19-1 record. But Scherzer has pitched poorly in two of his last three starts, creating new fuel for the ABM (Anybody But Max) crowd. ... [It's] close between Scherzer and the Rangers' Yu Darvish, with the White Sox's Chris Sale not far behind. (I'm less enamored of the Mariners' Felix Hernandez, who is in the middle of what likely will be a two-week break due to stiffness in his side and lower back, and the Tigers' Anibal Sanchez, who missed almost three weeks with a strained right shoulder.)
